Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, Division on Globalization and Development Strategies (DGDS), Office of the Director. The Statistician will report to the Director of DGDS.
Within delegated authority, the Statistician will be responsible for the following duties:
- Initiates the development of statistical and analytical methods for evaluation of, and compiles data on the main areas of work of the Division, such as national accounts, macroeconomic policy-related data, trade, financial stocks and flows, climate-related data, as well as income distribution, employment, and social policy.
- Ensures the quality of collected data for accuracy, consistency and comparability.
- Plans and conducts analytical programmes of work in the aforementioned relevant areas.
- Undertakes methodological research with regard to standards on concepts, as well as with regard to data usability for macroeconomic or global models and for the evaluation of financial vulnerability.
- Develops statistical or analytical methods for economic models.
- Provides guidance and advice to other departments, field experts, etc., in the operation and evaluation of statistical programmes relative to the aforementioned areas.
- Plans and co-ordinates seminars, workshops, expert meetings, etc.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
PROFESSIONALISM: Knowledge of statistical programming to assemble and analyse complex data. Rigorous and up-to-date knowledge of principles of National Accounting, and of macroeconomic and financial data. Knowledge of methods to assess consistency of National Accounts in the analysis of macroeconomics, distribution and employment, international trade, finance and climate-related issues. Ability to formulate strategies and produce technical reports and papers (up to publication standards) on these areas. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in statistics, mathematics, economics, sociology or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data is required.
Of these, at least three years of experience covering data on macroeconomics and finance, or income distribution and labour is desirable.
Two years of experience in data preparation for macroeconomic or global models is desirable.
Experience with programming languages to manage large datasets is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
